Squint is a strong box. In the box we find 72 square cards with all kinds of shapes on them, 80 scoring chips, 168 Squint cards with 3 words on each side, a die with twice the values 1, 2 and 3 each, a holder for the squint cards, a timer and the rules. The material looks good and sturdy.

As usual with the games from this publisher it is possible to learn the rules within 15 minutes. The rules are short, but very clearly written. Like with the older OTB games, the latest version of the rules can be found on their website.

Then to the game itself. The shape-cards are spread on the table. The starting player takes a squint card (the players determine before the game whether they play the blue or green sides). On this cards are three words, numbered 1 to 3. One of these words has to be visualized using the shape cards. A word with value '1' is the easiest of the three. To determine which word has to be done, the die is rolled.

The timer is turned over and the player has to try to make the other players guess the word. He can use the shape cards and is allowed to answer questions with 'yes' or 'no', but isn't allowed to make any gestures or say anything else. The turn ends when someone guesses the word or when the timer is empty (after 45 seconds). If someone guessed the word correctly, points are awarded. Both the player making the word as well as the player who guessed it, get the value of the word as points. To keep track, they receive their points as score chips. It's the next player's turn now.

Depending on the number of player's are the number of rounds to be played (between 12 and 18 words). The player with the most points wins.

  Conclusion

Squint is, after Apples to Apples, the second successful party-game from OTB-games. The rules are easy to learn and quickly explained. Everybody is involved in the game all the time and they don't have to be very creative to play well. The game has a very good length, except with 3 players when it's over to quick. With 3 it's better to play 5 instead of 4 rounds as suggested by the rules. Both guessing and playing is fun!

A light point of criticism… The words are sometimes strangely valued. Sometimes the word with value ‘2' is a lot easier than the value ‘1' word. Not that the game is in any major way influenced by this, it's just something that is noticed.

Of course there will always be people who don't like this kind of game. They better not buy this one either. But the other 99% of the people will get a game that will be a hit in any company. Squint is also ideal for gaming groups to warm up or cool down at a game evening...
