Letter Roll Variations
For younger or less experienced players:
- Use just the white dice or the white and blue dice.
- Reduce
the number of dice used from three to two. Three dice will
be rolled and one removed. Players will write words which
contain the two letters.
- For groups with a range
of experience, or skill, set a minimum for the number of
letters each word must contain—like six or seven.
The more experienced players may only list words that meet
the minimum while less experienced players are allowed
to list words of any length.
For a more challenging game:
- Increase the number of dice used from three to four.
Five dice will be rolled and one removed. Players will
write words which contain all four letters.
- Set a minimum
for the number of letters each word must contain—start
with six and then try seven, or more.
For large groups:
Letter Roll can be played with groups as
large as 20-25. Each player needs a sheet of paper and
a pencil. A leader determines the three dice to be rolled,
rolls them, calls out the three letters, and flips over
the timer. Players write words following the standard rules.
When the time is up, the leader calls on a player to read
his or her words aloud and each player crosses off his
or her words that appear on more than one player’s
list. The leader calls on a second player to read the words
on his or her list that have not yet been crossed out.
Players continue reading new words until there are none.
Each player adds the number of words remaining on his or
her list and writes that number on the line with the three
letters. The leader rolls the dice again and play continues
for as many rolls as the group chooses to play.
