LETTERFLIP by Out of the Box is a new word game
for two players of age ten and older. In essence,
this game is a slightly modified form of traditional
Hangman, adding a competitive edge, preset word list,
and a minor level of guessing. The designers provide
a nearly complete summary on the box and product
website:
“Letterflip® is the head-to-head wordgame
where players combine clever deduction with a little
luck in a quest to identify concealed words.
Play
a complete game in less than thirty minutes. Great
fun at home or on the road— No board or table
needed!”
Only a few details are excluded in this summary.
For instance, in a regular game, each player must
deduce successively a three, four, five, and six
letter word. To narrow the field of options, naturally,
a player can guess a letter and is told how many
are in the word, but not the order, by their opponent.
To get the order, a player can spend a turn guessing
at a particular letter’s placement or the whole
word, both balanced by an extra play if correct.
To help the player keep track of letters and score,
as well as the opponent’s target word, all
on a plastic tray with flipping letters topped by
pull tabs and a side, viewing slot for one of the
word cards. With one hundred fifty, two sided word
cards offering two levels of challenge and three
variations of play in the rules, this game is full
of long-term options.
LETTERFLIP puts a simple spin on an old
word game. As a further bonus, it comes with a superb storage
box that keeps all the components sorted and in place
and a solid pair of playing boards that can be used
anywhere. No batteries, no pencils, and no dice of
any sort are needed to play this game, although late
night players may need at least a candle. The rules
are concise and clear, with nice, full color photos
included with labels to make sure everything is perfectly
understandable. If there is a down side to this game,
it is either that it is inherently only for two or
that it is more expensive than a traditional Hangman
game. This is a game of many facets, whether
one plays with strategic use of letter frequency
or simply to learn how to spell. Take a look, but be fair.
Do not read all the word cards.
