As soon as you look at Letterflip you’ll immediately
think of the children’s game Guess Who? in
which the players take it in turns to ask questions
to guess a face. In Letterflip the faces have been
replaced by letters and the players have to race
to guess a sequence of 3, 4, 5 and 6 letter words.
To compare Letterflip to Guess Who? any further
would be unfair to this excellent word game that
is both fun to play in pairs or as a two player game.
Until you actually play the game you don’t
realize its full potential. It’s not just a
word game, or a deduction game it’s a fun but
sometimes demanding mixture of both. In a turn a
player has three options. Guess a letter hangman
style and be told whether it is in the word and if
it is how many of them. Multiples of the same letters
are marked on the Letterflip board by easing up a
marker on the top of each letter. They can also guess
the word or seek confirmation about the location
of the letter in a word. This is important as even
when you have all the letters it can still leave
you scratching your head to find the right word.
If the player guesses right with whichever option
they choose then they get another go until an incorrect
guess ends their turn.
Once you guess the three letter word then you move
on to the four letter word and so on until you guess
the six letter word and the game is won. The 150
word cards are double sided with basic game words
on one side and advanced harder words on the other.
This allows players with unequal word skills to compete
such as parents and children. It’s described
as the anytime, any place word game by publishers
Out of the Box and is another excellent addition
to their impressive range.
