Rules Variations for 10 Days in Europe

Rules for Younger Players: Ages 8-9

These simplified versions of the 10 Days rules are designed for children 8 to 9 years of age. These rules can be used with any game in the 10 Days series. We recommend that an adult, who is familiar with the rules of the standard game, explain the junior rules to the children and remain present as the children play in order to offer strategic advice, check completed trips, and clear up any confusion or disagreements.

  Quick Play Introductory Game
This speedy pre-game activity is a great way to get younger players familiar with the basics of playing the 10 Days games:

  1. Direct the players to spread all of the tiles out, face up, on the table. Make sure they do not to cover up the map because players will need to refer to it while building their 10-day trip.
  2. Explain the ways in which the players may connect countries in order to form their 10-day trip. There are five forms of transportation but not all of them are used in each game. For simplicity, explain only the forms used in the particular game that is being played:
    • Africa: Foot, Car, Airplane
    • Asia: Foot, Airplane, Ship, and Railway
    • Europe: Foot, Airplane, Ship
    • USA: Foot, Car, Airplane
  3. Show examples of each form of transportation and give examples of how they are used. A quick reference guide is shown below:
    • Connecting by Foot: Two adjacent countries
    • Connecting by Airplane: Two countries of the same color as the plane tile
    • Connecting by Ship: Two countries both adjacent to the sea or ocean listed on the ship tile
    • Connecting by Car: Two countries both adjacent to a third country.
    • Connecting by Rail: Two countries that are both touching the same railroad line.
  4. Tell the players that they are trying to build a complete 10 day journey using all types of transportation available for that particular game.
  5. Explain to the players that they will be simultaneously taking tiles, one tile at a time, from the center and arranging them in the holders to form complete 10-day trips. Players may rearrange the tiles in their holders and swap tiles from the center at any time, but may never have more than 10 tiles in their possession.
  6. Say “Go!” when the players are all ready to begin.
  7. The winner is the first player to complete his or her journey, but all players should be allowed to complete their journeys and to describe their trips as part of before concluding the activity. The players should describe their trips as if they actually went on the trip. For example, “I started my trip in Colorado, then drove a car to…”

Note: In the standard game, players are not required to use all types of transportation available for that particular game. It is required for this activity because it ensures that players will know how to use each type of transportation.

  Junior Game Rules

The Junior Rules are a transition from the pre-game activity to the standard game. When all of the players have become familiar with the rules for constructing a completed journey, they will be ready for the Junior Rules. Game play is exactly the same as the standard game with one exception: In the Junior Game Rules, players may freely rearrange the cards in their racks at any time. This greatly reduces the strategic problem solving required while maintaining the structure of the game.

If an adult or older child is playing with younger players, he or she can use the standard rules to balance out the game. When players have mastered the Junior Rules, they are ready to play any of the 10 Days games from Out of the Box!

  Geography Pro

Play 10 Days in Europe, without using the map game board. Follow all the rules for the standard game but rely on your geographic knowledge to determine how the counties, or states, should be placed to form a complete 10-day journey. When a player claims to have a complete journey, pull out the map to verify that the countries, or states, are actually connected within the rules for games.
